On the right hand side of Number 2, The Strand, high up, above the Carousel Amusements sign, observe ‘William in Orange’ mural
Painted in 2005 by Brixham artist William Henry Stockman.
Commissioned by Andrew and Tina Stockman of the Strand Art Gallery
The painting is of William “in” Orange, showing the artist, William Stockman in his trademark orange painting smock, landing in Brixham. The boat depicted is the Royal Barge of William of Orange, with its Royal Crest at the front. The artist holds up the hat of William of Orange, as shown on the statue opposite, and holds his own painting palette in his other hand.
The black and white cocker spaniel dog is Scamp, the artist’s dog who lived in the building with the artist, and sat at his feet whilst he painted. Scamp is featured in many of William Stockman’s paintings over the decades .
The artist always wore his orange smock whilst painting on the Brixham slipway called 'Artists’ Corner,’ opposite the mural, and his name “William”, meant that he was known as William “in” Orange, hence the mural title and depiction.
It is a large painting, of approx 8ft x 5ft, acrylics on board, and heavily varnished to withstand the weather. It is often shown on TV footage of Brixham Harbourside.
There is the early 2000’s Palm Tree logo on the flag, which was the Logo of Torbay Tourist board.
